Valerie Szarek’s voice and Native Flute is familiar at open mikes and festivals in the Boulder/Denver area as well as the Western Slope. Her poetry is human, political, and Shamanic, and crosses between the seen and unseen worlds effortlessly. Her music and words are Medicines for our world. Her poetry book Signs of Life was a Colorado Author’s League Award finalist and received an EVVY Award. Her Poem Letters to an Unknown God won 1st place in the National Poetry Federation Winner’s Circle and was a Colorado Author’s League Finalist. She’s been a featured poet at the International Young Leadership Conference in 2013, numerous Stage C performances, Karen chamberlain poetry Festival, and won 2nd place as the Ziggies Denver Poet of the Year in 2015 and 2017. She’s been a student of poetry at the Jack Kerouac school of Disembodied Poetics Summer Writing program at Naropa since 2005. She owns and operates Breezy Mountain Leather and maintains a healing practice. Val has traveled with writers to Prague and Egypt. “May I walk in beauty. Again.” is her favorite prayer.
